Several states have adopted the latest International Residential Code provisions for swimming pool barriers in 2026, tightening gate and gap requirements for new and renovated pools.
The core requirements
- Minimum 48-inch barrier height
- Maximum 4-inch gaps between vertical members
- Self-closing, self-latching gates with latches 54+ inches high
- Door alarms where a house wall forms part of the barrier
Florida, Arizona, and California continue to enforce the strictest standards. If you're renovating an existing pool, check whether your jurisdiction requires you to bring older barriers up to current code.
Pool barrier violations carry the steepest fines of any fence code — and they're the most actively inspected.
